Do you have your grandkids for the weekend? Time with the grandkids can be a wonderful opportunity to create some fun memories, but coming up with the new and fun things to do can be a chore. Here are fun things to do with the grandkids in the villages and the nearby areas to keep the good times rolling.
If your grand-kids are a bit older, then they probably love a good ghost story. Why not plan an evening of haunted history with an Ocala Ghost Walk? These walks are guided night tours through downtown Ocala’s most haunted spots. Lead by local supernatural experts, you’ll get a spooky education in local history and paranormal activity! You can learn here.
Open air shopping is a fun way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning, and the Ocala downtown farmer’s market is the perfect place to do it. You’ll get everything from local produce and baked goods to crafts and doggy treats- there’s something for everyone! The market runs from 9am to 2pm every Saturday until December. You can learn more here.
Introduce your grand-kids to the magical whimsy of Mary Poppins, performed live at the Ocala Civic Theater from September 3 to October 4, 2015. Lear more here.
Bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy gourmet food and a free outdoor movie in downtown Leesburg. Food and beverages are on offer from a selection of gourmet food trucks, and a blockbuster movie screen. These movie nights are planned throughout the month. Learn more here!
If the Minecraft mania has taken a hold of your grand-kid, you’ll win some serious points by taking them to the Minecraft Championships of Lake County on September 26,2015. Hosted by the Leesburg Public Library, a full day of Minecraft awesomeness is promised, with tournaments, mini-games, and contest planned throughout the day. The event will wrap up with the crowning of the first Lake County Minecraft Maniac Champion! Learn more and register here.
If your grand-kid is aged 9-15 and a Pokémon fan, they’d probably love the chance to join a Pokémon League in your area. This league is hosted at the Cooper Memorial Library. Members meet a couple of Saturdays each month to play cards or DS and battle for bragging rights. Learn more here.
Enjoy Labor Day weekend with the Ocala Carnival from Friday, September 4th to Sunday, September 6th. Experience the best of Caribbean culture through food, music, crafts and a carnival Parade. Learn more about the events planned here.
The Central Florida Zoo is hosting a Night Hike event on September 26th. Your grand-kids will love experiencing the sites and sounds of the zoo at night. The evening will begin in the Discovery Center with up close animal encounters. Fascinating night life will come to light as we venture into the Zoo for a guided flashlight tour and explore the Zoo after dark. – See more at: Central Florida Zoo
Maybe you’ve already covered the standard Gator tours, but for a new experience that is sure to thrill, why not take them to a Gator’s Night Shine?! Gatorland’s Gator Night Shine adventure takes you deep into the domain of Florida’s most famous reptile, the alligator! Armed with only a flashlight and a few hot dogs, you bravely make your way along the winding wooden walkways of Gatorland’s Alligator Breeding Marsh. The sounds of the night come alive around you as the rustle of feathers overhead and the splashing of water nearby signal that you are not alone. Turning your flashlight towards the water, you suddenly become aware of hundreds of hungry, glowing, red eyes slowly making their way closer… it’s now your turn to experience the “Real Florida.” This is a fun and educational tour suitable for kids of all ages. Learn more here.
If your grandkids are nature lovers, you’ll be interested to know that Osceola County has the largest population of nesting bald eagles in the continental U.S. It’s also one of the country’s few re-introduction sites for the endangered Whooping Crane. You can spot some of these awe-inspiring birds at Lake Lizzie Nature Preserve, the Osceola County Environmental Center, and in the Wildlife Management Areas of Bull Creek, Prairie Lakes, Three Lakes, and Triple N Ranch -all Great Florida Birding Trail sites near Orlando and the Central Florida region.
