How to Open Your Pool for the Summer

pool for the summer

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to put your swimming pool through its paces so the fun in the sun can begin! Below are a few tips to follow before you finally declare your pool open for swimming season.

Unveil Your Pool

After months of being covered up, it’s time to take your swimming pool cover off and store it for the next three months. No matter what type of pool cover you have, be sure to clean it and let it dry thoroughly before putting it away.

Initial Inspection

Take a cursory inspection of your pool. Make sure you remove any items such as freeze plugs that you installed to keep it from freezing over the winter months. If you did not clean your filter before closing the pool for the winter, you should do this now.

Start Your Engines!

Prime your pump before starting the motor and get all the air out of the plumbing and equipment. Before opening your filter, make sure any built-up pressure has been released.

Check and Clean the Pool

Hopefully, your pool cover prevented any debris from getting into your pool during winter. If some leaves or small insects have managed to sneak into your pool, simply remove them with your net. Vacuum your pool to get rid of any sand, algae or small debris that your net can’t reach.

Water Chemistry

Don’t add chlorine or other chemicals to the water without checking your pool chemistry first. Let the pump circulate the water for at least eight hours before taking a water sample. Check for alkalinity, pH, calcium hardness, etc., then add the needed chemicals in proper sequence. You can do this yourself if you have a pool testing kit or have a reliable pool professional do it for you.

Inspect and Install the Peripherals

Before you install the ladders, hand rails, etc., inspect them carefully to see if they need to be repaired or replaced. Take a close look at your diving board and make sure there are no stress cracks. If you notice any cracks, it may be time to for a replacement.

Follow these simple steps before opening up your pool for the summer and you and your family will enjoy a safe and fun summer in your pool.
