Orlando Pool Builders: The Importance of Pool Safety

Posted on November 22, 2013 at 6:52 pm

Pool safety is critical for home pool owners, especially those with young children. That’s why the professionals at All Seasons Pools are all about safety with their home pool clients in Florida.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, children under age 5 make up 75 percent of pool drownings, and the drownings are preventable. As one of the foremost Orlando pool companies, All Seasons Pools recognizes this. The Orlando pool builder says home pool fencing and effective supervision are two of the top ways to guard against accidents and injury.

In their continued effort to promote safety, All Seasons Pools offers the following safety recommendations.

Supervision

  • An adult should always be present when children are swimming. Even if the parent is sure a child swims well, an adult should be within arm’s reach of a child who is under five years old.
  • It is not wise to leave older children to watch younger children in the swimming pool. Children, regardless of age, are easily distracted. It only takes a few minutes to land into deep trouble in a swimming pool.
  • Pool parties are fun, but make sure an adult is designated to watch out for children around the pool. Stress the importance of this job to the person selected so that expectations are clear.
  • For emergencies, keep a first aid kit nearby so that an adult can get to it quickly.

Swimming Pool Gates

  • Orlando pool companies can install pool gates if you don’t already have them, but make sure they open outward from the pool. All pool gates should have a high latch. They should be self-closing and self-latching.
  • Make sure the gate does not open if a child bounces on the bottom rails.
  • If there is a gap between the gate and the fence large enough for a small child to pass through, fix it.

Swimming Pool Fences

  • Get a fence that goes around the swimming pool that is both secure and in good working order.
  • Make sure all the fence panels are securely in place
  • Check for gaps in the fence that can be repaired
  • Check the distance between the bottom rail and the ground. Can a child pass underneath?
  • Rusted, loose or missing screws can be potential hazards.
  • Post a resuscitation sign so that it is prominently displayed. If not on the fence, find a wall where it can be easily seen.

Distractions

  • Pool toys should be stored securely out of view as to not tempt little ones to seek them out when unsupervised.
  • Remove items that can be used to climb the fence. Chairs, ladders, potted plants, grills should all be stored either inside the fence or well away from the fence.
  • Make sure trees or shrubs near the fence are trimmed so that a child can’t use them to climb a fence. Also, keeping them trimmed makes it easier to see a child who may be in trouble.

Electricity

  • Keep radios and electronic devices away from the water.
  • Do you have a Residual Current Device (RCD) or Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) on your power supply? They have triggers to prevent electrocution.

Take it from Orlando pool builders All Seasons Pools — observing these simple precautions can save a life and help you enjoy your pool worry-free.
