5 Ideas for Sustainable Landscaping with Rocks

Have you thought about using rocks while landscaping your backyard? Your backyard should be an oasis where you and your family can enjoy quality time together. Whether you have a pool in your backyard or plan on landscaping your yard, sustainable landscaping with rocks is a great method of adding more appeal. Here are 5 ideas for sustainable landscaping with rocks that any homeowner can employ to create a more natural look in their backyard.

1. Create a Border

Using rock or gravel, you can create a border along your fence or even along the edge of your property. If you are tired of trimming grass from your walkways and sidewalks, consider adding a rock border to keep unsightly growths out. The rock can be evenly spread in a straight path along your borders to create a rock trim.

2. Decorate an empty space

Large rock formations are great for filling up empty space in your backyard. If you have a large area with no features, the use of strategically placed rock formations can give your yard more depth and character.

3. Make your pool look more natural

The use of rocks near or even inside your pool is a growing trend. Rocks can be placed around your pool or built into the construction of the pool to give it a more natural look. Using large rocks, a professional landscaper or contractor may be needed.

4. Create a path or a walkway

Rocks can also be used to create a path through your yard. Instead of making a permanent cement walkway, you can lay a path using flat rocks (Flag stone) of varying sizes. This is a landscaping project that most homeowners could undertake on their own.

5. Decorate your flower bed

Rocks are also great for filling flower beds or vegetable gardens. The use of rocks will help prevent weeds from sprouting up around your flowers or plants. The same method could also be used along your foundation to help prevent moisture from penetrating your basement.

These are just a few suggestions for sustainable landscaping with rocks. In reality, the possibilities are endless. Always take your time when landscaping and ensure you are happy with the results. For more outdoor living tips and ideas, visit our Outdoor Living Gallery now!
